| Personal Statement:My strengths as an educator come from a diverse array of teaching experience. My educational career began when I was in high school. As my younger sister suffers from dyslexia and other learning disabilities, she struggled in her classes, in particular, math. I spent most of my high school and early college years as her personal tutor. When I began attending College of Idaho, I joined the Math Club and later served as president of Writer’s Org. Both were student run organizations whose mission was to provide drop-in tutoring for college students, helping with problem sets from math classes and reviewing and revising papers for other subjects as well. When I graduated from college, I moved to Portland and started teaching full time at an alternative school that predominately served gang affected students, LISTOS Academy. LISTOS Academy fell victim to the financial recession and had to close its doors midyear in February, and once we helped all of our students transition to new schools, I took another full time math teacher position at Leadership and Entrepreneurship Public Charter High School (LEP). LEP’s mission is similar to that of Revolution Prep’s, to provide an innovative and rigorous education to any student that passes through its doors. After two years of teaching high school, I decided that I want to focus on grad school with the intent of teaching college. While while working on prerequisites for my graduate studies, I spent a year tutoring with Three Rivers Tutoring Company and substituting at LEP, as well as serving as their Technology Coordinator. I am currently working on graduate studies in Mathematics and Water Engineering.This extensive experience gives me the ability to understand the points of view of many different types of students, ranging from students whose parents had little education or whose families do not speak English in the home to students from well educated and wealthy families. My strength as a teacher comes from my ability to relate to a variety of different students with varying interests. Learning any material is difficult if there is nothing to relate it to, as human cognitive understanding comes from our ability to recognize that one thing is like another. To cultivate deeper understanding in students, I make a strong effort to give examples that are truly relevant to a particular student or group of students. This was the basis for project based learning at LEP, as well as my basis for tutoring students through Three Rivers. I go to great lengths to nurture students’ intrinsic motivation for learning. This can be especially challenging for many students in regards to math. However, with the proper approach, it is achievable, even for students who “hate math”. A teacher’s personality has a lot to do with learning, and I approach teaching with a positive attitude and a sense of humor to nurture students and reinforce their intrinsic motivation to learn.Lastly, I believe that for a person to keep a healthy mind, he or she needs artistic outlets as well as a healthy amount of physical exercise. In my spare time, I enjoy indulging in artistic expression through a variety of media. In particular I like taking pictures and manipulating digital photography and I have had several successful shows in Portland and Idaho. Additionally, I play the cello and guitar and am learning to play the violin. My artistic endeavors aside, I enjoy various athletic and outdoor activities. I have competed on a dragon boat team and in triathlons, and in college I competed on the varsity swim team. These extra curricular activities along with my educational and professional background offer me a multitude of channels to relate to students’ interests. | |||
